How do I dress a person that represents themself and yet not themself, for example in performing arts or films inbetween fiction and dokumentation? This question was the starting point for my theoretical master's thesis on the borderline phenomena of authenticity and staging in fashion and costume. The thesis is inspired by my own work as a costume designer. I enjoy working on these transitions. The result is an examination that takes fashion and costume design seriously as complex, creative practices and draws them into shared creative responsibility as part of an image system.
A plea for more patina, more gaps and for a self-reflective responsibility on the part of fashion and costume designers within representation processes.
